Poison isn't sure if he's hung over or what, but he spent half the morning after the Pride events feeling kind of groggy and a little dazed. After finally untangling himself from Jack he stumbles into the bathroom. He emerges again in a pair of his pajama pants - beige with black bears on them - and t-shirt that's too big for him. Probably Jack's. He's pretty sure he still has glitter in his hair despite his shower.

He makes a little noise, kind of pitiful, and then realizes he hasn't seen Sunny since yesterday. He goes to knock - gently - on her bedroom door.

"Sunny Girl, you here?"

He tries not to be too loud - he thinks it's only fair that he let Jack sleep.

"Yeah. He was fifteen when we first hooked up and then like a year or so later you came into our lives." He smiles, then looks down. "Ghoul and I were kinda dumb. Or, okay, I was dumb. We basically circled for a while and I hooked up with literally anyone that wasn't him for a while. Because he scared me."

"Literally anyone, huh?" she says, eyebrows raised. A smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. She can picture him - young and fey and beautiful. "Why did he scare you so badly?"

"I told him he made me think of a black hole," he says, almost shyly. "That if I got too close, that was gonna be it. Once you go over the event horizon there's no coming back out. And... I just felt like if I got too close to him, everything else would cease to exist. And I was not wrong."

"That's romantic as shit. Wow." She laughs a little, still leaning back against him. She takes one of his hands, idly playing with his fingers, tracing the delicate bones. "I'm sorry you lost him, P. I'm sorry we both did."

Poison laughs, and it's actually a bit wet though he's not really crying. Not yet. "Yeah? He thought I said some weird shit, but... I think he thought so too." He wets his lips.

"I'm sorry too, baby girl. I'm sorry for a lot of things." He kisses the top of her head.

"Don't tell me you're sorry anymore, P," she says, softly, squeezing his hands. "I don't want that. I just want to talk about them and be happy that we got to know them."

He smiles and bumps his head against hers. "Thank fuck you're so damn smart," he says with a smile. "Ghoul'd say the same." Poison gives her a gentle squeeze.

"Way to get me to not interrogate you about Carson, by the way."

"You can ask," she says, tipping her head back to look up at him. "It's not that I don't want to tell you."

Poison smiles and gives her a little nudge. "So tell me about him. Is he in school? Does he have a job? I saw him for like a second at Pride, but what's he look like?"

"He just graduated from high school. Going to the University in August. He wants to be a journalist?" Dee's got no reason to trust journalists, not with everything she knows of them from Bat City, but Carson isn't dangerous - she feels that, in her bones, in her guts. "He's...handsome. Dark hair. Blue eyes. Sweet face. Too soft and sweet for me."

"Nothing is too anything for you, my dear girl. Besides, believe it or not, you can look pretty soft and sweet yourself." He smiles and playfully pinches her nose.

She rolls her eyes and swats at him.

"I pointed you out to him at Pride."

"Yeah? Did I freak him out?" He's a little worried, because he'd been in rare form at Pride. And a little high for part of it, and definitely drunk for other parts.

"No," says Girl, shaking her head. "He took the flippy little skirt pretty well in stride. And he says he won't be a dick unless you're a dick to him first." She huffs a laugh. "I warned him that that can be kind of touch and go."

Poison rolls his eyes. "That is not a challenge he wants to lay down. But I promise I'll... try to be good." He has a bad habit of calling out shit but hopefully this Carson guy won't do anything to warrant it. If Sunny likes him, he has to be good. "And I'll try to look more uhm-- I'll wear not femme stuff."

"Maybe just not the first time you meet him?" she asks, smiling up at him. "I don't want him to think my dad is prettier than I am, do I?"

He laughs and rolls his eyes. "I don't think even I could manage that, Sunny Girl. You turned out as beautiful as your mom, and everyone was a little in love with her."

She loves it when he talks about her mom like that. She smiles at him.

"Even you?"

"Especially me. I would've followed her anywhere." He smiles. "She made me believe we had hope."

"I wish I remembered her," she says. "I can't even picture her."

"Hey, lemme show you something." He gently eases out from under Sunny to go to the drafting table. Yes, it's technically Jack's, but he uses it a lot too. He picks up his sketchbook and comes back. He flips through a few pages as he sits down, then hands it over to Girl.

It's a page full of her mother's face with different expressions.

"That's your mom."

The tears are sudden and immediate. A sob escapes her mouth. Staring at the page, she can see the likeness - she recognises her own features in the woman's face. Their hair is the same texture. Their eyes are the same colour.

"You did love her, didn't you?" she says, tears rolling down her cheeks. "Just a bit."

"Wasn't lying," he says with a gentle smile. He reaches to wipe Sunny's tears away. "Especially when I said you look so much like her, Sunny Girl. I know she'd be so proud of you. Of everything you are and everything you've done."

He kisses Girl's hair.

She stays curled up against him for a moment, studying a painting of her mom smiling. She traces the twists of her hair with the tip of of her finger. Grace. She knows her name was Grace.

"What was she like?"

"Amazing. She was so brave. Kinda short." He laughs. "When I first met her I was like, this is it. This is totally a person I would die for. I believed in everything she told me. She had so much conviction, but she was also like... really practical."
